Building Layers
The demonstration is doing a good job of showing how you can be quite ruthless in covering up
what has gone before, and how you really don’t need to worry over it.
You’ll find written content below the video.
Video – 4 minutes 59 secs
You can work like this, working instinctively, going with the result and mixing as you go.
I start by mixing paint and applying it with the pallette knife.
Working quickly I soften and blend using a hog hair brush.
I keep on painting, picking up small amounts of paint from the pallet.
The paint on the brush mixes with it, changing the colour right on the painting.
I mention drawing into it, early on.
What I meant by that is scraping to show the colour behind, but I forgot to do that on the right hand side.
But I show it briefly on the other side.
I was using my very old hot lights for filming, and the paint was drying faster than expected.
I have some LED lights now so I’ll make another video sometime, showing how it works.
In the video I also say “paint the areas one at a time”.
I marked the transcript * because that’s not quite what I meant.
I think I meant you add colours and use them in areas a little at a time so that it doesn’t become ‘muddy’.
The painting is developing now, and next time I’ll show you more changes in the sky, field and trees.

Ok, I decided we’re gonna go Much thicker here, we can do that, hm?
(and I start painting without speaking until..)
Oh, get a bit bolder, and just fill it up. Good Stuff!
I’ll be drawing into it a bit more later.
and blend in haze.
Just dip into that dark blue to make it.
You mix your colours, I mean you paint the areas one at a time.*
Just keep going right across there, you see.
Something quite nice is happening there, which can change.
That’s the beauty of acrylic. You can use everything in kind of layers.
It’s really very forgiving. Make a mistake? Just go over it, ok?.
Let’s put a little bit of that bluey stuff in here, just to, just to get that.
You know what I’m going to do – I’m going to show you something else.
More white. I don’t want to go too dark, just yet.
A bit more white. I’m just going to touch that water again ’cause this hot light is making you go..
Now I’m going to paint that on hard, like that.
Thickish, but not gloopy.
Right, just like that.
Now I’m going to take this old brush I’ve got here,
and I’m going to squidge into it.
Look at that. That’s showing through.
I’m being quite vigorous there, you can hear, maybe.
Except I might make it silent but..
I want a big trunk, give it a bit more.
A big trunk, like that. There you go. Wow.
I’m showing you too many different things at once but anyway, there it is.
