Paints for Vegetarian and Vegan Artists

Vegetarian and Vegan Art Question

We understand that many people are concerned about animal ingredients and animal testing, not only vegetarians and Vegans, and want to ensure that the materials they use are animal friendly, and that includes concerns about the environment and toxicity.

The base ingredients and pigments in Outlines paints are all synthetic. Our paints do not contain any pure pigments that contain toxins.

When we were looking for paint manufacturers we looked for those who used the best ingredients and were regulated, both for the manufacturing process and for the fair treatment of their workers. We wanted to exclude animal products and testing in our paints, while paying particular attention to toxic ingredients and environmental impact.

We chose those who have been inspected by qualifed independent assessors who issue certificates for quality, safety and fairness.

Our paints have been thoroughly tested and the ingredients analyzed.

Pigments

Most of the variables in each colour are the pigments, all of which are synthetic and many of which were discovered, or formulated, nearly a century ago.

‘I must point out that I am an artist, not a chemist and do not know, or understand, the full chemical composition of each pigment.’ Christina

We are attempting to investigate the components of the pigments further in order to give a fuller answer, but the searching is long-winded  and frequently comes to a dead-end because they were originally made such a long time ago, and there are Twelve different pigment colours to try and track down.

We do know that for many years all chemical testing has been done in laboratories and that animals have been not involved in testing.

Chemical Ingredients Data

The material data sheet (MTS) in the certificate document has information on ingredients and the components. It includes the percentage quanties contained in each colour.
You can download the document from this page:
https://outlinesart.com/certificates/

The MTS contains information on more colours than are included in Outlines set so to avoid having to jump around within the pdf, this is the list of our colours in the order they are listed in the document:

Titanium White (White),
Lemon Yellow,
Yellow Ochre,
Crimson Red,
Raw Umber,
Viridian,
Ultramarine Blue,
Vermillion,
Burnt Sienna,
Lamp Black,
Cerulean Blue,
Sap Green.

I found the vegan society’s definition of veganism and they sensibly include the words
seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable“.

As far as possible I have done everything I can to ensure Outlines paints contain no animal ingredients and have not been tested on animals, while paying particular attention to toxic ingredients and environmental impact, but I continue to do my best to find out how successful my choice was as far as veganism and vegetarians are concerned.

Claiming to be vegan is tricky because some sources are vague and cannot easily be traced, but I am trying, and will add to it if I find more.

Any updates will be added to this page.
